Historic Murphy Avenue Streetscape and Utility Project

September 21, 2009

The new sidewalks along the south side of Evelyn Avenue from Frances to Sunnyvale Avenue are completed. Installation of the new street lights is being scheduled. Trees are to be planted in November.

Replacement of street trees, street lighting, and sidewalks on the north side of Washington Avenue has been delayed due to unanticipated utility conflicts. Temporary walkways have been provided.

The pavement and curbs along Murphy Avenue from Washington Avenue to Frances Avenue were removed and utility renovation work begins this week.

Murphy Avenue will remains closed to vehicles. While Murphy Avenue is closed for construction, sidewalk areas on both sides of Murphy Avenue will remain open for access to businesses.

Businesses in the downtown area remain open during the project and special events in the area are being planned, including the pet parade on October 25, 2009. The contractor is voluntarily suspending their daily work from noon to 1:00 pm to reduce impact on businesses during the busy lunch time.

The Farmer's Market is operating in the Caltrain surface parking lot during construction on Murphy Avenue.

Downtown Sunnyvale visitors and shoppers are encouraged to park in the new parking structure on the west side of Macy's. The entrance to over 650 free parking spaces is from Taaffe Street, south of Washington Avenue.
